Excerpt from Address Delivered at the Ceremony if Laying the Corner-Stone of the New York State Institution for the Blind at Batavia, September 6, 1866
That which distinguishes humanity - which lifts man above all created earthly beings, and to a rank a little lower than the angels, is the mind, or soul, with its powers of outlook and self-inspection. But mind, or soul, or spirit - call it as we may would be powerless and worthless in this state of being without language.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book challenges contemporary perceptions of the effects of blindness, particularly regarding the education of blind children. The author argues that blindness does not inherently lead to misery and that blind children are capable of the same intellectual and emotional development as sighted children given the correct instruction. The text draws on historical examples of blind individuals achieving great success to support this argument. Some of the existing institutions for the blind are critiqued for adopting an almshouse mentality. Instead, the author advocates for blind children to receive the same public education as other children and to be treated as equals in society. This book offers valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and anyone interested in the well-being of blind individuals.
