This compilation is designed to embrace such laws of the United States as are of general interest to the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the Navy Department, and to present a more convenient book of refer ence than the Revised Statutes. The alphabetical arrangement of subjects is without regard to the Titles and Chapters of the Revised Statutes, although some of the Titles are the same. In the margin of each section, or group of sections, the number of the Title and the Chapter of the Revised Statutes to which they belong are given; and if the Title itself be desired, it can be found in the Table in the Appendix. In the Appendix will also be found Resolutions of Thanks, &c., in recognition of meritorious services, special relief-acts affecting the status of officers of the Navy, and general relief-acts not embraced in the Revised Statutes; also a copy of the original Constitution, with its amendments. The analytical index will aid in referring to subjects not forming a distinct heading.
