The prisons are divided into a first and second class according to their size, and it is a common, and as far as I can judge pretty correct complaint, that the first class prisons get anything they require, while the second class are left to pig along as best they can. At the former, the chief warders get 1502. Per annum, and a house and uniform. At the latter, the salary commences at lool. Per annum, house and uniform, and rises by yearly incre ments of 2l to 1207. At the Xshire Prison (which is rated as second class) the chief warder under the county got 80l. Per annum, with house, fuel, light, uniform, and boots. In this arrangement the second class prisons certainly went to the wall, for before the Govern ment took the prisons the salaries of chief warders were all much the same (80l. A year being an exceptionally high one) but here there was only an immediate gain of 20l. Per annum, while at others the salary was just Upon doubled.
