Excerpt from Enabling Resilience and Enhancing Assets: Famine Mitigation From a Seeds and Tools Perspective
Uncertainty is the way of life in these environments. There is no equilibrium state, no meaningful average yields, no average rainfall. So we cannot speak of any ability of these ecosystems to return to a normal equilibrium state. Instead we must track resilience. Resilience determines the persistence of relationships within a system and is a measure of the ability of these systems to absorb change. Our goal in famine mitigation is not just to keep each famine we detect from happening, but to reduce vulnerability through increasing the resilience of ar-risk populations.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores strategies for famine mitigation in underdeveloped regions, particularly those stemming from seed and tool shortages. The author argues that these areas all share common agroecosystem characteristics, such as irregular rainfall and informal social organization, which can be capitalized on to create sustainable solutions to hunger. The author introduces the six most important assets to boost: seed and vegetative propagules, local storage capacity, manufactured local tools, soil enhancement, water catchment, and local transportation infrastructure. Of these, the most cost-effective and rapid interventions emphasize seed and vegetative propagules. Crop varieties with varying maturities, drought tolerances, growth habits, and nutritional contents provide the smallholder with the resilience they need to respond to the environmental uncertainty characteristic of semi-arid areas. This book provides principles, successful strategies, and issues to consider in famine mitigation interventions, along with a procedure for rapid assessment of specific parameters of famine-prone agricultural systems.
