Excerpt from Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, Vol. 1: Part 1; History of the Survey, Geological Introduction, Geology of the San Juan District
Although the topography on the whole is very rugged and the island has a decidedly mountainous aspect, there is almost everywhere a very moderate relief along the coast and at many places the coastal lands are almost flat. These very flat areas lie always at the mouths of rivers and undoubtedly have been made in large part by deposition of the silts of the streams. Such alluvial tracts are called playas in Porto Rico.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the history of a scientific survey undertaken in Puerto Rico from 1913 to 1917, initiated by the New York Academy of Sciences. The six-chapter book presents the diverse findings of a team of researchers assembled to comprehensively study the island's geology, paleontology, zoology, anthropology, and botany. The survey's multifaceted approach to the study of Puerto Rico provides a historical record of the island's distinct flora, fauna, and geological formations as they were in the early 20th century, forming a scientific baseline against which modern ecological observations can be compared. It also informs current scientific understanding of the evolutionary and historical relationships between the organisms and landforms found in Puerto Rico and the rest of the Antilles.
