What little knowledge I possess I have gleaned from the citizens of Georgetown, among whom I was born and reared; and what little property I enjoy I owe to their patronage. The older citizens of the town were well acquainted with the father of the Chronicler. - He was no general; he never com manded an army and slew thousands of men and gained a victory; neither was he the governor of a province, and starved the peasantry to feed an idle court, but a peaceable, quiet citizen, a store-keeper by occupation; and when he died. He left the Chronicler, then thirteen years of age, an heir to his good repu tatien.
