From the northern plains to the Gulf Coast, the author collates reports on insect populations, damage and control methods used by farmers and agricultural specialists. Grasshoppers are reported as troublesome in several states, especially in field margins and idle lands. The first-brood European Corn Borer survey in Iowa showed infestations to be the lowest in the past five years. Several reports are given on the Corn Earworm, with significant populations in grain sorghum heads in Oklahoma, and infestations in Alabama and Michigan. The book details the increase of the Fall Armyworm in southern Alabama. Corn Rootworm adults are noted as active in several Midwestern states, and damage is reported in some areas. The Hessian Fly caused severe damage to wheat in Michigan. The author highlights increases in populations of the Clover Aphid in Idaho, and Lygus Bugs in Nevada and several other states. Beet Leafhoppers are active and damaging sugar beets in Wyoming, while the Potato Aphid is increasing on potatoes in several Colorado counties. The Cabbage Looper and Lygus Bugs are causing economic damage in Mississippi and Alabama, while the Rest Tent Caterpillar is causing defoliation to cottonwoods in northern Idaho. The book concludes with reports on the abundance of mosquitoes and the troublesome presence of horn flies in various areas.
