Excerpt from A 20 Bit + Sign, Relay Switched D/A Converter
In 1975 a new program was initiated at the National Bureau of Standards to provide measurement support for the burgeoning electronic instrumentation industry. An initial requirement of the program was for an accurate, digitally programmable voltage source to serve as a refer ence standard. High resolution, linearity and stability, as well as ease and flexibility of operation were the primary performance require ments. A d/a converter having the following specifications was devel oped to meet these criteria.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book describes a 20-bit, sign-magnitude, voltage-output digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with less than 1 part per million (ppm) linearity error. The DAC is based on an R-2R ladder network switched by latching relays with mercury-wetted contacts. The author presents techniques for minimizing errors due to relay thermal emfs, implementing a self-calibration of linearity errors, and obtaining optional coding formats. The book also discusses calibration techniques and presents representative calibration data. The self-calibration feature allows the linearity of the eight most significant bits to be measured and adjusted if necessary, making this DAC suitable for high-precision applications such as digital voltmeters and data acquisition systems. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
