Part I of this book presents a very complete bibliography, current to July 1972, of the literature on the interdisciplinary field of cooperative phenomena near phase transitions. Although the bibliography is in part intended to complement the editor's Introduction to Phase Transitions and Critical Phenomena (Oxford University Press, 1971), the range of subjects covered here extends well beyond the scope of the earlier book and includes such topics as binary alloys, helium, structural phase transitions, liquid crystals, and cooperative phenomena in biological systems. While the 2500 articles in the bibliography are arranged alphabetically, quick referencing by categories is provided by a coded letter appearing in the left margin. Preceding the bibliography is a list of all conferences on critical phenomena held since 1964, with complete references to their published proceedings.
There is no better source for acquiring understanding in this field than a study of the original articles themselves. Accordingly, 100 of the 2500 articles in the bibliography are singled out for special attention. Part II contains reprints of 35 articles on experimental aspects of cooperative phenomena near phase transitions. Some of these, such as Andrews' 1869 paper reporting the discovery of the critical point in carbon dioxide, are classic, while others are relatively recent. Theoretical articles in this field generally tend to be longer, and therefore the 65 theoretical articles chosen are represented by abstract only in Part III.
This book is designed to be of use to the teacher structuring a course on cooperative phenomena or statistical mechanics in general. It should also provide an invaluable reference to workers in the field.
