Excerpt from 1932 Index of Illinois State Normal University, in Five Parts: A Record of the Year at Old Normal
The organization that has been attempted in this book was not born of a desire to strike cross-grain of tradition. Those who are familiar with the work of the master printers of the renaissance will see that what knowledge of the graphic arts which we pos sess has been used in a traditional manner. The structural letters which twentieth cen tury Europe has contributed to the field of typography have been avoided, although they carry in their simple forceful lines the truest spirit of modern artistry. Let some one in years to come use Girder or Futura, or the descendants of these simple, masterful designs; machine-cast Garamond will have to serve us. And we have tried to make a format which is in harmony with Garamond.
