Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book maintains that for societies to function, they require a justice system that punishes criminals. The key principles behind punishment are justice, morality, and social utility. Over time, the concept of social utility has influenced legislators, causing punishment to focus on deterring crime rather than justice and retribution. However, the author argues that punishment should be administered according to a scale of severity appropriate to the crime, taking into consideration the intentions of the perpetrator and the needs of society. The author's exploration of the history of criminal punishment will challenge readers to rethink the role of punishment in a just society.
