Excerpt from The Neo-Protection Scheme of the Right Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies
Under these circumstances it seems almost superfluous to enter at length, for the hundredth time, upon the reasons which make an y such proposals as those of the Canadian delegates and of Mr. Chamberlain - for they are in effect one and the same undesirable and impracticable. Purposely vague as they were and consequently presenting as small a front to attack as possible they have been felt to involve principles which the country is unwilling to accept, and have fallen through with no result except discredit to their promoters.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a spirited discussion on the topic of implementing a commercial federation of the British Empire. The author examines a proposal to give preferential treatment to colonial products in the United Kingdom, as well as an arrangement modeled on the German Zollverein. The author argues that in practice, these proposals are impractical and undesirable, and would likely have negative impacts on the industries and trade of the involved parties. The author delves deeply into the economic history of countries and their trade agreements, with a focus on the history of relations between the United Kingdom and its colonies, outlining the development of a global free trade system and protective tariffs. This book will appeal to those interested in free trade, protectionism, and the historical development of the British Empire.
