Before beginning your studies in the Reader, you should understand the end to be attained and know how to use the Reader to get the best results from your study. Students who have taken our French Conversational Lessons and French Grammar should now be able to speak and write French correctly. The Reader is intended to increase your command of the language by giving you a larger vocabulary, and by familiarizing you with the many idiomatic expres sions found ih all kinds of French literature.
One of the chief objects to be attained in learning a new language is the ability to think in that language. You should always bear this constantly in mind when studying the Reader, and when so studying you should not translate either the words or ideas into English, but should grasp the thought in French. You will, of course, have to look up the meanings of new words. In some instances, the Lexicon will be found to give several meanings for a word; some times the meanings will not be at all related, but in such case you will be able to select the right one from the context of the sentence.
