The author was an active participant in this transformative process, providing him with unique insights into the problems and potential solutions within the Irish prison system. A central problem was how to turn criminals into productive members of society after their release, and a system was devised that prioritized rehabilitation over punishment. The crux of the plan was to recognize that all prisoners have potential for good, regardless of their crimes. This recognition spurred a system of rewards and punishments that helped prisoners reform. The author traces the development and implementation of this system, while also describing the challenges and obstacles encountered along the way.
