Excerpt from Le Fils De Giboyer: With an Introduction and Explanatory Vocabulary
As long as school-days lasted I lived in luxury. I carried off all the prizes, and the boarding schools competed for your ser vant as for a living advertisement; so much so that in the up per class I got by competitive examination a private room and permission to smoke. But I soon had to lower my pretensions. My benefactor offered me a place as school-usher at 600 francs, he suppressed the room, the pipe, and the evening leaves of ah sence. I could not stand that, so I dropped teaching and went in for adventures, full of confidence in my powers, and never suspecting that this high road of education in which our fine society lets so many poor devils enter is a no-thoroughfare.
