Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book studies the stone epitaphs of the Renaissance in Breslau, Germany. The author traces the evolution of their styles from their first appearance in the late 15th century through the period of their ascendancy in the 16th century. The development of the epitaphs during this period mirrors the transformation of the Gothic into the Renaissance style, seen in the switch from depictions of the deceased to more general religious scenes, and in the appropriation of new decorative motifs, and symbolic elements. The author argues that these epitaphs were primarily influenced by southern Germany and specifically the area around Passau. The presence of imported pieces from this region strongly suggests that there was a lively artistic exchange between this part of Germany and Breslau, and possibly also a direct influence on local craftsmen. The rich collection of surviving epitaphs in Breslau thus provides a valuable insight into this period of transition and artistic exchange.
