The size of the current school - aged population in North Carolina reflects birth trends during the past 18 years. The two most significant features of these birth trends, which North Caroli na has shared with most other states, are the very high birthrates of the late 19505 followed by sharp declines thereafter. During the Depression, in 1936, the national birthrate stood at births per persons; it reached a high of in 1957 but plummeted to in 1975 - evenbelow the Depression level.3 Compar able figures for North Carolina were and It appears unlikely that birth rates will increase much above current levels in the foreseeable future.5 We can trace the impact of these changes in birth trends 011 North Carolina school enrollment, as Figure 1 shows.
