Excerpt from Economics: Lesson 17
Competition was keen and pronto were small in the United States in the period following the Civil War. Con sequently we find bera'the loosest kind of combination (the pool) coming into prominence in American manufac turing industry. An instance given by Ripley is the case of the Michigan Salt Association. Competition in the salt trade had proved very destructive of the capital engaged in it, and finally about 1866 we find the salt manufacturers in Michigan agreeing to sell their product to an Associa tion which was to dispose of it for them. Thus they would cease to compete against each other in the market and would be enabled to secure enhanced profits.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the formation and activities of monopolies and trusts, a prevalent concern in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The author analyzes how these entities sought to dominate industries and maximize profits, often at the expense of consumers and smaller competitors. The book also examines the legal and regulatory challenges that arose in response to these practices, including the Sherman Anti-Trust Law and the Combines Investigation Act. Through a detailed exploration of historical cases and economic principles, the author sheds light on the complex interplay between market forces, government intervention, and the pursuit of economic power. The book's insights remain relevant today, as concerns about monopolies and antitrust enforcement continue to shape economic policy and business practices.
