Excerpt from Issues of the Exchequer: Payments Made Out of His Majesty's Revenue During the Reign of King James I
It is but justice to add, that this King paid a similar mark of respect to the memory of his predecessor Queen Elizabeth,jj by erecting a costly tomb§ to her honour, though himself and his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, during the former Queen's lifetime, had certainly received no very great marks of her kindness. How far the haughty and imperious Elizabeth (could she have been conscious of the fact) would have approved the removal of the bones of her great rival so near her own, is a subject for specu lation amongst the admirers of her character.
