Excerpt from Lessing: Ausgewählte Prosa Und Briefe
The following selections from Lessing's prose writ ings are designed to present a few specimens of his multifarious activity as fabulist, literary and dramatic critic, philosopher and theologian. So much of Les sing's best writing consists of fragmentary efiusions, or is so entangled with references to authors and charac ters long since consigned to oblivion, that it is some what difficult to present extended extracts complete and intelligible in themselves. His views on art as set forth in the Laokoon, his attainments as a classical scholar, archaeologist and antiquarian, his eminence as poet and dramatist, must be discovered by a further perusal of his works, to which this volume may serve as a slight introduction. To this end frequent bibliographical references have been embodied in the notes for the benefit of teachers as well as students.

The letters explore the relationship between religion and human understanding, examining the role of faith and reason in shaping our comprehension of the divine. The author argues that religion should be based on the search for truth and a desire for moral improvement, rather than on blind obedience to dogma or tradition. Through a series of thought-provoking arguments, the author challenges conventional beliefs and encourages readers to think critically about their own religious views.
