Excerpt from Goethes Prosa: Consisting of Selections From Goethe's Prose Works, With Introductions and English Notes
With reference to the word-translations which 1 have given in the notes, I have followed my usual plan in such cases, in order to have a safe guide regarding the want of such help. I consulted the german-english dictionaries most in use, and only when I found that the requisite English equivalent was not given, I put the translation in the notes. In giving this help, I derived in several instances considerable advantage from Mr. John Oxenford's translation of Goethe's Autobiography, which fur nished me with some very happy renderings of German expressions. I gratefully make this acknowledgment here, in general, as regards single expressions; but whenever I borrowed from his translation the rendering of entire phrases, I invariably mentioned the fact.
