Excerpt from The Making of the Empire State
The chaptefg of this book consist, in the main, of the narration of epochal events in the growth of New York State. They do not constitute a connected history; indeed, it is doubtful if such a history has any place Whatever in juvenile literature. The things told, however, are events with which both young and old are expected to be familiar. In the preparation of the book I am indebted for information to the late Dr. Isaac Stout, of the Department of Public Instruction, and to Principal B. E. Hicks, of Painted Post. To my wife, Lilian Burnham Redway, I owe much for faithful and painstaking help.
