Excerpt from Greek for Beginners
And not even the most enthusiastic admirer of Greek as a language will go so far as not to recognize the object of learning Greek in a knowledge of Ho mer, Sophocles, and Demosthenes, no less than in understanding the form of the aorist or use of the Cptative. But the only way by which the intellectual treasures to be found in the Greek language can be come so perfectly familiar as to have a real influence in education, is an accurate knowledge of the lan guage; and the study of the language in the literal sense, that is, careful practice in the forms and their uses and the gradual unlocking of the treasures of the vocabulary, justly lays claim to a large part of the time devoted to learning Greek.
