CONTAINING THE COMPLETE LATIN text alongside a new English translation of Fides et ratio, this book is the first in a series of studies which address, from a variety of different perspectives, the questions raised by this encyclical. This work is inspired by the assurance of John Paul II that by insisting on the truth of faith, we can both restore to contemporary men and women a true confidence in their capacity for reflecting and can also inspire philosophers to regain and develop the proper dignity of their discipline. Contributors to this volume provide commentary and analysis which substantially advance debate about Fides et ratio. This series, co-published with SCM Press, is informed by a desire for the mutual engagement of the disciplines of theology and philosophy on issues of faith and reason. Volumes in this series constitute an ecumenical renewal of the work of philosophical theology, both as an illumination of the foundations of faith, and as an apologetic for faith that may be heard by those in search of truth.

LAURENCE PAUL HEMMING is dean of research students at Heythrop College, University of London, and a deacon of the Archdiocese of Westminster. He is the author of Heidegger's Atheism, published by the University of Notre Dame Press.

SUSAN FRANK PARSONS is Director of Pastoral Studies at the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology, Cambridge.
