Several learned authors have publilhed their inquiries on the origin of Chefs. Iwill not venture to give my opinion on their con formity with the Latrzmculi of ancient Rome The Chinefe play at Chefs; but their game ts nothing like ours, either in the moves of the pawns, or the firength of the pieces. The Arabians very probably brought this game into europe; and their authors afcribe its invention to the Indians. Though Chefs has contributed to the amufement of the greatefi Heroes, for many ages paff, the Spaniards and Englith fcem to have been principally engaged in it, fince the firfi treatifes on that fubjeét have been printed in thofe languages.
