Quando, il 29 luglio scorso, mio fratello Edmondo, a trentasette anni, era d'un tratto strappato alla vita da una fiera infezione tifosa, che in dieci giorni vinse la resistenza di un organismo vigoroso e spense una mente instancabile nelle opere del pensiero, il mano scritto del presente volume su Mazzini e Gioberti era già da più mesi integralmente consegnato al tipografo, e se ne erano tirati i primi tre fogli. Toccava a me il. Carico penoso di curare il séguito della stampa; e questo carico volli assumere, per quanto costasse al l'anima turbato dal nuovo lutto, dall'assiduo ricordo e dalla visione della breve e tragica lotta di quel caro essere col male, dall' indeclinabile dolore per una vita feconda di pensiero e di buone opere recisa per sempre!
