Your eminence may be pleafed to call to mind fome letters fent to this effeft to the am' ballador and to monfieur de Bas, who in effect did not omit to make to the proteélor the overtures ofthis fincere confederacy; and that after he had received with indifi'erency the commifiioners on his behalf, they declared, that it was not yet feafonable to enter into that treaty and, that it was firlt expedient to regulate the articles propounded, and upon which the conferences were begun.
