While spectacles had been used for centuries, their true use and powers were largely misunderstood and often misrepresented. Through clinical research and observations, the author, who was one of the prominent ophthalmic surgeons of his time, aimed to bring clarity to the subject and correct the rampant misunderstandings of the day. The book introduced the then new diopter system of measuring lenses, which is still used today, and provided an in-depth analysis of essential concepts which were later expanded on and remain at the core of corrective eyeglass prescription.
