Excerpt from Essentials of Medical Electricity
Galvanic or Voltaic electricity receives its name from the early Observers Galvani of Bologna and Volta of Pavia. Between whom an earnest controversy existed as to the origin of the phenomena. Volta held that the galvanic current was caused by the contact Of two dissimilar metals; but this theory is rejected by scientists of the present day. On the other hand, Galvani claimed that the results produced by him were due to electricity generated in the animals on which he Operated. It remained for Fabroni, of Florence, to first intimate that chemical action was really its source; and he enunciated this opinion whilst observing the action taking place in the pile invented by Volta about one year before the latter's death. Many eminent scientists of that day supported this view, and among them was Sir Humphry Davy. About the year 1807, Sir H. Davy obtained by electro lysis the elements potassium and sodium; and thereafter dis coveries followed in rapid succession, owing to the labor of such tireless workers as Dulce, Zamboni, and Oerstead, until a cul minating point was attained in 1827, when Ohm announced the law which has since borne his name. Mathematical accuracy as applied to electricity then for the first time assumed its posi tion.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an in-depth exploration of medical electricity, a field that emerged from the experiments of scientists like Galvani and Volta. The author describes the discovery of galvanism and the laws that govern it before explaining how to generate a galvanic current using a simple voltaic or galvanic couple. The book explains the electrical and chemical principles behind the various types of galvanic batteries, from the Voltaic pile to the Law cell. The importance of understanding the internal and external resistances in determining the current strength is emphasized. The author argues that it is essential to be able to measure the electrical current used in medical applications, and describes the use of instruments like the galvanometer and milliampere meter. The book concludes with a discussion of the various electrodes and current controllers used in galvanotherapy. It highlights the need for careful handling of electrical equipment and provides guidelines for safe and effective use of medical electricity.
