In preparing this book, the author has endeavored to pre sent, in a limited number of pages and in as simple a manner as possible, all the grammatical forms of the Span ish language actually required for practical purposes, with out burdening the student's memory with useless rules and classifications. All details and exceptions of minor impor tance have been relegated to an appendix, the study of which may be taken up in connection with a review of the Lessons.
The utmost care has been taken in making the explana tions so clear and explicit that they should be readily under stood by even those students who have not the advantages of a teacher's instruction and have never before attempted to learn a foreign language. The author hopes that this will make the book a safe guide for self-instruction, as well as a means of saving much of a teacher's valuable time in the class room.
In the chapter on Pronunciation, the insertion of graded exercises after each group of letters and the adoption of the familiar marks used in Dictionaries and Readers will, it is hoped, aid the beginner materially in acquiring a good pronunciation in a comparatively short time.
The sentences composing the exercises are taken from the conversation of every-day life, and not only furnish the illustrations to grammatical rules, but supply, at the sametime, a full equipment of all those expressions that are most necessary for the purposes of business or travel, so that this book may be considered as a Manual of Conver sation arranged in grammatical order.
