Excerpt from Aristarchus, or the Principles of Composition: Containing a Methodical Arrangement of the Improprieties Frequent in Writing and Conversation; With Select Rules for Attaining to Purity and Elegance of Expression
Mr. Milner was the master: he made such rapid progress in his studies, that he was admitted a member of Trinity College at Cambridge in the year 1777. Here he continued about one year and a half, when he removed to Queen's College (where Mr. Milner's brother was tutor), and he is said to have attained great proficiency in the Greek and Latin languages.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book cogently argues that the meanings of words and turns of phrases must be constantly re-evaluated to maintain a high standard of communication and avoid degrading a language. The author draws evidence from the history of the English language, showing that the established ideas of the 18th and 19th centuries regarding grammar, syntax, and sentence structure are often insufficient for clearly expressing the concepts of the present day. They argue that the mind is not unchangeable, and that language, being an idea system within the mind, must therefore also evolve. The book challenges assumptions about the meaning of words, grammar, and syntax. It concludes by making a case for a new understanding of language, one that is more fluid and adaptive to change.
