Excerpt from Travels in Various Parts of Peru, Including a Year's Residence in Potosi, Vol. 1 of 2
Numerous travellers have written on the pre sent state of South America, and, although I have myself not overlooked existing circum stances, yet, I confess that I have taken greater pleasure'ln contemplating what that country may, and most probably will become, than in expatiat ing on subjects of which we have heard so much from others. All the physical elements of great ness there exist, the moral only are what require to be called forth and developed. Under this idea, the views which I have taken of the coun try and its inhabitants are, for the most part, prospective.
