Excerpt from The Design, Construction and Test of a Rectifier
The electric light has now become quite popular, nearly every city of a thousand inhabitants or so having its electric light plant. At the time of the greatest activity in this line it was the fad to install indiscriminately single phase apparatus producing an alternating current having a frequency of from 100 to 140 cycles per second.
One of the objections to this system was the fact that elec tric fans and small motors could not be profitably operated, for vita a transformer system connected to the mains for 24 hours, the core losses in the transformers might amount to as much as the revenue from the current sold for these small powers.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book captures the essence of the synchronous conversion of electricity from alternating current to direct current, a process fundamental to the establishment of a reliable electric light source in the late 19th century. The author, an electrical engineering student in 1899, details the design and construction of a rectifier in direct response to the need for a residential device that could convert the electrical current from the local power plant into a type usable to charge storage batteries. The bulk of the narrative chronicles the author's process of designing and building the rectifier, beginning with the calculation of necessary dimensions, the sourcing of appropriate materials, and ultimately, the assembly of the device. Once assembled, the author thoroughly tested the rectifier's functions and capabilities, recording his observations in tables and graphs that illustrate the correlation between energy input and output, power factor, and efficiency. Through this iterative process of design and testing, the author enhances the reader's comprehension of the fundamental electrical concepts at play and showcases the practical applications of alternating and direct current.
