Excerpt from The Early History of the Typewriter
Sometime during the month of July, 1867, while employed as chief operator in the office of the Union Telegraph Company in the city of Milwaukee, \vis Mr. C. Latham Sholes, whom I had known for some years, called at the office and asked for a sheet of carbon paper, some thing which was rarely used in those days, except in making duplicate copies of Asso ciated Press reports received by telegraph for the daily press.
