Quite at home, and where anything trivial or modern or practical would be out Of place. NO description could be given in words, and those who have at tempted it have failed. But to those who love the place it has sometimes appeared odd that distin guished writers have been so little able to convey any idea of its beauty. O. W. Holmes visited it, and wrote afterwards that he had enjoyed eating peaches in the garden! Stow got as far as saying that it is a place not without its pleasures. Howitt writes of the 'stillness,' the 'dreaminess,' the 'eu chanted region,' the 'perpetual loneliness;' but to those who live there the word rest conveys the inner most feeling. The house seems to rest upon the green lawns as if it could float away at any moment. It rests there as a butterfly settles on the flower that shows ofl its beauty best. The air is full of the cawing of rocks, the lowing Of cattle, the cooing of the doves, the barking of a distant (log, and the chiming of still more distant church bells; but the house in its setting remains undisturbed, and, though children may laugh and shout around it, the spirit of man is quieted by its restfulness.
