Excerpt from A Concise Account of the Material Events and Atrocities, Which Occurred in the Present Rebellion: With the Causes Which Produced Them, and an Answer to Veritas's Vindication of the Roman Catholic Clergy of the Town of Wexford
Verax, publifhed 1n the Dublin Journal, containingr obfer varions on fome falle alfertions Hated m Sweeny' s Birming ham Chronicle, relative to the conduct of the poplih Clergy at vvexford, had produced an Anfwer figned Verit as of no lefs than twenty-feven Pages. Nothing0 can be a flronger indication of guilt, than the entering into a defence againfi Charges which have not been made, and this is evidently the cafe of Veritas, who launches out into a long exculpation of the Popilh Clergy of the County of Wexford at large, from a catalogue of heinous offences, of which, however firongly they {land convicted in the Public Mind, Verax did not accufe therri, as he confined himfelf entire ely to the following fubflantite points: That the Popifh Clergy in Wexford were not terrified or Prifoners at large, and that they were the only perfons there polfeffed of authority. For this realon, Veritas appears to me to be a very bad Advocate for his Sacerdotal Friends, for by attempting to leilen their enormities, he only makes them appear more prominent.
