Vaincu par la ténacité et par l'ardente conviction de Hildebrand, Henri III finit par acquiescer à la demande des Romains et ceux - ci désignèrent aussitôt comme candidat àla papauté, Gebhard, évêque d'eichstädt, l'ami de l'em percur et son conseiller le plus écouté. C'était ce même Gebhard qui avait décidé Henri III à ne pas venir en aide à Léon IX dans la guerre contre les Normands. Les malheurs et la fin prématurée des trois der niers papes venus tous les trois de la Germanie, ne ]llstl fiaient que tr0p ces craintes de Gebhard; elles s'étaient déjà manifestées dans I'épiscopat de la Germanie, lors de l'élection de Léon IX. Tout fut mis en oeuvre pour amener les ambassadeurs àrenoncer à Gebhard et à choisir un autre candidat; l'évêque d'eichstädt alla jusqu'à expédier secrétementà Rome des émissaires chargés de dépeindre aux Romains sous les couleurs les plus noires le candidat de Hildebrand; il espérait que les R0mairis effrayés désa voueraient leurs ambassadeurs.
