It will be perceived, that the whole of the Elementarbuch 11011113 be too extensive a course for the present condition of our classicai schools. Too narrow limits, however, ought not to be assigned to the studies of the youth whose annual exhibitions me ever reminds ing us how rapidly are advancing in the cancer of classi~ cal literature. Under these impressions the whole of the first volume of the Elementarbuch, Plutarch's Lives from the Se. Cond volume, and some of the extracts from Home1 {16111 the fourth volume, have been selected to compose the present work. The compilation is such as net only to afford the learner a series of progressive lessons, but also to improve his taste, conect his judg fcm'ent, and above all, to inspire him with a relish for the history of the most distinguished and most cultivated people of that age.
