There are openings at the lower end of each frame; all must be closed with the exception of Numbers 1 and 12; but they must be disposed so as to be opened at will.
Figure 3 exhibits the hive as an open book in part, to Show that the frames of which it is composed may be joined together, and Open like the leaves of a book. A a, are shutters which close it at each end.
