Excerpt from The Making of Europe: An Introduction to the History of European Unity

The art of the catacombs is the first outward manifestation of Christian culture, and shows in a remarkable Way how the external forms of the old roman-hellenistic culture were assimilated and modified by the new Spiritual forces. Early Christian art took over the traditional commonplaces of the Hellenistic house - decorator, and infused them with a pro found Spiritual meaning. The subjects are mere generalised types or symbols_ - a fish, a clove, or a figure borrowed from heathen mythology - the value of which consists entirely in their hieratic and mystical significance to the initiated. Of these figures the most popular is that of a woman in an attitude of prayer - the oransma figure that symbolised at once the soul of the deceased, the freed and enlightened Spirit of man, and also the Virgin Church, the Bride of the Spirit.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the period often referred to as the Dark Ages, a time of profound change and transformation in Europe. Spanning from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Norman Conquest, the author sheds light on a crucial era that laid the foundations for Western civilization as we know it. The narrative explores the complex interplay of various forces that shaped this period, including the Roman Empire's legacy, the rise of the Catholic Church, and the influence of both classical tradition and barbarian cultures. Through examining the ascendancy of the East and the formation of Western Christendom, the author reveals the intricate processes that led to the emergence of a distinct European identity. This book offers a fresh perspective on the Dark Ages, challenging the notion of it as a time of mere barbarism and ignorance. Instead, it highlights the remarkable creativity and resilience of this period, showcasing its pivotal role in shaping the cultural, religious, and political landscape of Europe. By delving into the ideas and beliefs that motivated the people of this era, the author provides a deeper understanding of the foundations upon which our modern world stands. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
