Excerpt from The Biological Problem of to-Day: Preformation or Epigenesis? The Basis of a Theory of Organic Development
Shortly after the appearance of Dr. Oscar Hert wig's treatise Preformation oder Epigenese I published in Natural Science (1894) a detailed abstract of it. But the momentous issues involved in the problem of heredity, and the great interest excited by Dr. Weismann's theories, make it de sirable that a full translation should appear. By the kindness of Dr. Hertwig and his German pub lisher, this is now possible. I have prefixed an introduction, written for those who are interested in the general problem, but who have little acquaint ance with the technical matters on which the argument turns. In the actual translation I have tried no more than to give a faithful rendering of the German. After no little perplexity, I have rendered the German word Anlagc as rudiment.' It is true, a double meaning has been grafted upon the English word, and it is widely employed to mean an undeveloped structure, without discrimination between incipient and vestigial character. I use it in the etymological sense, as an incipient structure. For the difficult words, Efrbglcz'ch and Erbunglcfich, a succession of new terms have been suggested. Here I use for the first term the word doubling,' for the second differentiating.'

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the ongoing biological debate about whether organic development stems from preformation or epigenesis. The author, a distinguished scientist, presents a comprehensive analysis of a prominent theory of preformation, known as the germ-plasm theory. This theory posits that the fertilized egg cell contains all the hereditary information necessary for the development of an organism, and that this information is passed down through generations via a specialized substance called the germ-plasm. The author critically examines the germ-plasm theory, arguing that it fails to account for certain aspects of embryonic development. He puts forth an alternative theory based on the concept of epigenesis, which holds that the fertilized egg cell contains only a set of instructions for development and that the actual formation of the organism occurs through interactions with the environment. Through a series of experiments and observations, the author supports his epigenetic theory, challenging the long-held belief in preformation. This book offers a significant contribution to the field of developmental biology, providing new insights into the fundamental processes that shape the growth and evolution of living organisms.
