Excerpt from Introductory Essay to the Study of Fortification, for Young Officers of the Army
But it must be thoroughly understood that, in order to obtain an intelligent knowledge of the whole subject, an officer must proceed to study larger and more elaborate works; and especially that he should make himself acquainted with the principles of the great arm of Artillery, with out which, no enlarged conceptions can be formed of the powers either of attack or defence. It is Artillery combined with Musketry, that ani mates military works; and such is the present power of Artillery that it may be safely said to be double what it was when the great masters of the art, Vauban, Coehorn, Bousmard, &c., wrote their able treatises on Fortification.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a military handbook offering comprehensive instruction on constructing field fortifications for armed forces. Written in the 19th century, the author was part of the corps that served the Duke of Wellington, and the writings reflect that depth of experience. The book begins with the basics of trace, profiles, and the building of lines and redoubts. But the author also includes detailed instruction on building different kinds of barriers, including abatis and chevaux de frise, as well as how to build special features like bridgeheads. Throughout the text, the author offers advice that mixes the practical observations of a veteran engineer with the theoretical knowledge of a scholar. The principles and tracing presented here remained a vital part of military field fortifications into the 20th century and informed current theories of defense.
