Lacedaemoniorum accessit, penes quos summum erat imperium, atque apud eos conteudit falsa iis esse delata; quare aequum esse illos viros bonos nobilesque mittere, quibus fides haberetur, qui rom explorarent; interea se obsidem retinerent. Gestus 10 est ci mos, tresque legati functi sum'mis honoribus Athenas missi sunt. Gum his collegas suos Themistocles jussit profi cisei, eisque praedixit, ut ne prius Lacedaemoniorum legatos dimitterent, quam ipse esset remissus. Hos postquam Athenas pervenisse ratus est, ad magistratum senatumque Lacedaemon 15 iorum adiit, et apud eos liberrime professus est, - Athenienses suo concilio, quod communi jure gentium facere possent, deus publicos suosque, patrios ac penates, quo facilius ab hoste possent defendere, muris sepsisse, neque in eo quod inutile esset Graeciae fecisse; nam illorum urbem ut propugnaculum 20 oppositum esse barbarie, apud quam jam bis classes regias fecisse naufragium: Laeedaemonios autem male et injuste facere, qui id potius intuerentur, quod ipsorum dominationi,| quam quod universae Graeciae utile esset. Quare, si suos lega tos recipere vellent, quos Athenas miserant, se remitterent 25 aliter, illos nunquam in patriam essent reeepturi.
