There are passages which serve to Show that Shute had made genuine observations of buildings in Italy. He brings to his subject some independent thought, as in his passage on the diminution of Orders upwards. He clearly felt that the expression of character in a building was as necessary as the Orders themselves, although he sets out to illustrate them as the first and chief grounds of architecture. He would like a building to be Doric, Ionic or Corinthian in character rather than to be an exhibition of all the Orders. When adding a special plinth, like the moulded riser of a step, under the complete pedestals of the Ionic and Corinthian he justifies himself as follows.
