Excerpt from Nerve Prostration and Other Functional Disorders of Daily Life
IN placing this work before the profession, I venture to make a few remarks by way of explanation. While fully recognizing the important services rendered to medical science by recent pathological discoveries, I feel convinced that the distinction between functional and structural dis orders is one which is not yet obliterated. Some sanguine observers think that the term functional will soon be expunged from medical nomenclature, on the ground that every disturbance of function must be due to change of structure. Even admitting the validity, though by no means capable of demonstration, of this latter statement, it does not follow that the change should always be of such a character as to be discoverable by the aid of any instrument whatever.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book thoroughly examines the idea of functional disorders, those which do not display definitive structural abnormalities. The author, a respected expert in the field, argues that while these disorders can currently be difficult to diagnose, they are no less real for that. Exploring a range of examples, from nerve exhaustion to irritable heart, the book demonstrates how these conditions can be distinct from organic disorders, and proposes that they may indeed represent a distinct class of ailments. The book traces the evolving understanding of functional disorders, from their historical marginalization to their recognition as significant contributors to human discomfort. Ultimately, the book highlights that these disorders are worthy of attention, understanding, and appropriate treatment, and that their study can illuminate the complex relationship between mind and body in maintaining our health.
