Excerpt from Pensées de Pascal, Vol. 1
On trouvera plus loin l'histoire de la vie de Pascal; je voudrais faire ici celle de son esprit et de ses idées. Je laisse à d'autres l'entre prise de discuter les Pensées; je voudrais seulement les expliquer. Je ne prétends qu'étudier l'homme et son génie dans ces fragments, et _me rendre compte des caractères particuliers que cette défense de la reli gion présente entre toutes les autres.
Pascal est d'abord un mathématicien, un savant il l'est dès l'enfanec, si l'on peut dire qu'il ait eu une enfance il dépense le feu de sa jeu nesse dans ces travaux; avant vingt-cinq ans, il est en possession des plus grands résultats. Puis, du milieu de la vie aride de la science, nous voyons ce coeur, que la poursuite de la vérité abstraite ne satis fait pas, s'ouvrir à des pensées qui le remplissent davantage. Il cher che la passion, mais pure, et la vertu, mais brûlante. Il était chrétien il devient dévot ce n'est pas assez il devient sectaire, car la piété commune ne lui suffit pas. La dévotion qui l'a conquis ne le laisse plus échapper et finit par absorber tout son être. Elle est encore exaltée par la maladie, qui s'est saisie de lui dès l'adolescence et qui depuis ne cesse de lui livrer des assauts, jusqu'à ce qu'elle l'accable à trente-neuf ans, irritant par ses continuelles atteintes l'impatience de son esprit absolu et la mélancolie de \n âme ardente.
