Excerpt from Beethoven
In this translation effect has been given not only to certain corrections made in the second German edition of my book, but also to a number of further additions and alterations that seemed to me of importance. I take this opportunity of thanking the translator for the great care and pains he has devoted to his difficult task, and for his readiness to comply with the various wishes I expressed during several weeks' collaboration with him. My especial thanks are due to Mr Alan Bush, Pro fessor of Harmony and Composition at the Royal Academy of Music, for his valuable help in the rendering of a number of technical terms - in particular of certain words that are the same, but have a different meaning, in English and German, and are, indeed, not always free from ambiguity in either language. I hope and believe that it has been possible in each case to render precisely the meaning I attach to these terms.
