To-day.the fortune-hunters drill for Oil along the Gulf of México, and often acquire wealth only less fabulous than that of the Aztecs whom Cortés despoiled. As a republic México is not much more than a hundred years old, and there are still serious problems to be solved before the Indian and Spanish elements of her population can be welded into a true democracy.
