Excerpt from Notes on Mitering Lock Gates
Locks, as applied in canals and harbors, are used to permit the safe passage of vessels from one water level to another. The separation of the levels is secured by means of movable barriers, called gates.
It is not the object of the present treaties to discuss the construction of the complete lock, but of the gates alone, which, while forming but a small item in the cost of the whole structure, are nevertheless its most vital parts.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex and multifaceted relationship between water pressure and mitering lock gates, structures used in canals and harbors to control water levels. The author approaches this topic with both theoretical and practical expertise, taking into account the physical forces affecting these gates and the engineering challenges involved in their design. The book delves into the historical development of mitering lock gates, tracing their evolution from simple structures to the sophisticated, high-performance gates used today. The author examines the various materials and methods employed in gate construction, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, and the impact these factors have on gate performance. Moreover, the book explores the crucial role of water pressure in shaping the design and operation of lock gates. Complex calculations and mathematical modeling are introduced to provide insights into the distribution of pressure across gate surfaces, helping engineers optimize gate construction for both strength and efficiency. Ultimately, this book offers an invaluable resource for engineers, designers, and researchers working with mitering lock gates. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the forces at play, the materials used, and the engineering principles involved in designing and operating these critical components of water infrastructure.
