Excerpt from Plane and Spherical Trigonometry
This text-book in Trigonometry aims to develop in the student the ability to think out and apply the relations between the trigonometric functions. The definition of the functions by means of projection is not only based on a conception familiar from Geometry, but is also the key to many of the applications of the functions.
Tables of functions are not included in the book, as it is thought better that the student use separate tables.
The student should learn from the start that Trigonometry demands reasoning, not memorizing.
Teachers are beginning to recognize that it is more profitable for students to check computations, either by means of a check formula or by comparing the results of independent work than to rest content with a result that agrees with a printed answer. For this reason answers are as a rule omitted in this text.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. Embark on a journey into the world of angles and triangles with this comprehensive guide to plane and spherical trigonometry. The author lays a solid foundation by delving into the fundamental concepts of angles, their measurement, and their relationships with trigonometric functions. This book explores the historical development of trigonometric functions, tracing their roots back to ancient geometrical concepts. The author then systematically explains the six primary trigonometric functionsââ âsine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecantââ âand their interrelationships. With a focus on practical application, the text delves into solving plane triangles, exploring real-world problems involving heights, distances, and angles. Moving beyond the plane, the book ventures into the realm of spherical trigonometry, equipping readers with the tools to navigate the complexities of triangles on the surface of a sphere. Throughout, the emphasis remains on fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encouraging readers to understand the reasoning behind trigonometric principles rather than relying on rote memorization. This timeless exploration of trigonometry offers valuable insights into the mathematical principles that govern our understanding of angles, triangles, and their applications in various fields. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
